Toilet Chronicles

admin 2 years ago

So I figured it was time to jump right in and make a post about a game.

I decided to start with Toilet Chronicles. Released in mid-2022, it goes for about $8 US on Steam and Itch, and is described as a “first person horror-comedy game.” I realize that the image shows the game as being called Toilet Chronicles Part 1 but as far as I can tell, the game is officially titled just Toilet Chronicles. There’s also a free DLC called Staff Only that adds a few more rooms and endings to the experience.

Published by Bomi Games, Toilet Chronicles is the work of solo developer Abdykarimov Madi in what appears to be their first release. In terms of gameplay, it’s somewhat similar to games like The Stanley Parable in that you navigate a series of different story options, ultimately reaching one of over a dozen endings.

The tone is humorous with a good bit of absurdity and a handful of pop culture references and memes sprinkled throughout the world. The various endings each trigger an achievement (where available), though some are much more obvious than others, and may require starting several playthroughs with the same steps and making minor changes near the end, similar to games like Please, Don’t Touch Anything.

Visually, the game has a good number of hidden details (mostly hints to progress the story) and an overall impressive look and feel courtesy of Unreal Engine 4. Sound effects, voices, and music are all relatively minimal. They’re not bad, but the game is also short enough that nothing really stands out.

In total, I was able to get all of the achievements and endings in under 90 minutes, which included starting the game to check a few details and grab some screenshots to write this post. So while it’s not a terribly long game, Toilet Chronicles a solid (that wasn’t a poop joke) debut for the developer and comes in at a fair price for its relatively short length.

I’m adding a review section, though I’m not sure if I actually want to keep doing that. If you’re reading this, feel free to let me know how you feel about it. I could just as easily spotlight games without putting an actual score on them, and that would be fine with me. I’m more interested in highlighting the work these developers are doing, rather than criticizing it.
